A plain X-ray uses a very small, carefully controlled amount of radiation to picture bones, joints and the chest. It is the quickest test in radiology — most examinations are over within minutes, and no preparation is needed.
Every X-ray taken at Benchmark is checked and formally reported by our on-site Radiologist, so subtle findings are not missed.
What to expect
- You may be asked to remove jewellery or change into a gown so metal does not obscure the picture.
- The radiographer positions you standing, sitting or lying, depending on the body part.
- You hold still for a moment — for chest X-rays you will be asked to take a breath in and hold it.
- Most visits are finished within ten minutes.
Types we offer
- Bones & joints — injuries, arthritis, alignment and follow-up of fractures.
- Chest — heart and lungs — one of the most commonly requested tests.
- Spine — neck, mid-back and lower back.
- Abdomen — selected conditions where your doctor requests it.
How to prepare
| Examination | Typical preparation |
|---|---|
| All plain X-rays | No preparation. Wear comfortable clothing without zips or metal where possible; you may be asked to change into a gown. |
These are general guidelines — please follow the specific instructions we give you when you book or arrive.
What to bring
- Your referral (request form or letter from your doctor).
- Your Medicare card, and any concession, Health Care or DVA card.
- Previous images of the same area, if you have them.
Your results
Our on-site Radiologist reviews your images and sends a formal report to your referring doctor, who will discuss the results with you. Results are not given out at reception.
Common questions
Is the radiation dangerous?
The dose from a plain X-ray is very small — for many examinations it is comparable to a few days of the natural background radiation we all receive. Our equipment is calibrated to use the lowest dose that still gives a clear picture.
What if I am, or might be, pregnant?
Tell our staff before the X-ray. Depending on the body part, the test may proceed with shielding, be modified, or be deferred — we will discuss it with you and your doctor.
Do I need an appointment?
No. X-rays are walk-in during business hours — patients are seen in order of arrival.
Can I get a copy of my images?
Yes — ask our reception team and we will arrange access for you.
