Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves — no radiation — to create remarkably detailed pictures of the brain, spine, joints and soft tissues.
Because of the magnet, safety screening is essential: we check every patient for implants and metal before entering the room. Tell us when booking about any pacemaker, defibrillator, cochlear implant, aneurysm clip, infusion pump or possible metal in your eyes.
What to expect
- You complete a safety questionnaire and remove all metal before entering the scan room.
- You lie on a padded table inside the scanner, which is noisy — we give you earplugs or headphones, often with music.
- Each scan sequence takes a few minutes; keeping still is the key to sharp images.
- Tell us beforehand if you are claustrophobic — positioning, communication and support make most scans very manageable.
Types we offer
- Brain & spine — detailed neurological imaging.
- Joints & sports injuries — knee, shoulder, hip, ankle and wrist.
- Soft tissues — as requested by your referrer.
How to prepare
| Examination | Typical preparation |
|---|---|
| Most MRI scans | No fasting. Leave valuables at home; remove all metal including jewellery and hair clips. No eye makeup or hairspray on the day. |
| If you have any implant or device | Tell us when you book — we confirm its MRI safety before your appointment. |
These are general guidelines — please follow the specific instructions we give you when you book or arrive.
What to bring
- Your referral and your Medicare, concession or DVA card.
- Details (make/model card if you have one) of any implant or device.
- Previous imaging of the same area.
Your results
Our on-site Radiologist reviews your images and sends a formal report to your referring doctor, who will discuss the results with you.
Common questions
Is MRI safe?
MRI uses no radiation, and is very safe once we have confirmed you have no incompatible implants or metal — that is what the safety questionnaire is for.
I am claustrophobic — what are my options?
Tell us when booking. Many people manage well with explanation, music and a call button in hand; for some scans positioning can help. Your doctor can also discuss a mild sedative — you would need a driver.
Why is my scan not bulk billed when my friend's was?
Medicare MRI rebates depend on the exact item requested, the referrer type and licensing rules — two similar-sounding scans can be funded differently. We will always tell you the cost before you book.
Can I be scanned with a pacemaker?
Some modern devices are MRI-conditional and can be scanned under specific protocols; others cannot. Always tell us about your device when booking so we can check safely.
