Breast Imaging

Diagnostic breast imaging, delivered with care

Our breast imaging service is diagnostic — for people with a breast symptom, a finding that needs a closer look, or surveillance requested by their doctor. We combine low-dose mammography with breast ultrasound, read together by our on-site Radiologist.

If you are well, without symptoms, and aged 50–74, the free BreastScreen Australia program is usually the right pathway for routine screening — we can point you to your nearest service.

What to expect

  • A female staff member performs your mammogram, and a female sonographer is available on request for ultrasound.
  • Each breast is gently compressed for a few seconds per image — firm, but brief.
  • Ultrasound often follows on the same visit, so the Radiologist can correlate both tests.
  • Tell our staff about implants, previous breast surgery or if you might be pregnant.

Types we offer

  • Diagnostic mammography — low-dose breast X-ray for symptoms, follow-up or surveillance.
  • Breast ultrasound — first-line in younger patients, and a partner to mammography at any age.

How to prepare

ExaminationTypical preparation
MammographyDo not wear deodorant, talcum powder or body lotion on the day — they can mimic findings. A two-piece outfit is easiest.
All breast imagingBring any previous breast imaging so we can compare.

These are general guidelines — please follow the specific instructions we give you when you book or arrive.

What to bring

  • Your referral and your Medicare, concession or DVA card.
  • Previous mammograms or breast ultrasounds, if not done with us.

Your results

Our on-site Radiologist reads your mammogram and ultrasound together and reports promptly to your referring doctor — urgent findings are communicated the same day.

Common questions

What is the difference between this and BreastScreen?
BreastScreen Australia is a free population-screening program for well women, mostly 50–74, with no symptoms. Diagnostic imaging — what we provide — is for anyone with a symptom or a finding that needs work-up, referred by their doctor.
Does a mammogram hurt?
Compression is firm and can be briefly uncomfortable, but it only lasts seconds per image and is essential for a clear, low-dose picture. Tell our staff if you are tender — timing and technique can help.
I have implants — can I still have a mammogram?
Yes. Tell us when booking; we use specific implant-displacement views, and ultrasound adds further information.
Can I request female staff?
Mammography is performed by female staff, and a female sonographer is available on request for breast ultrasound.
